This summer, BRTA partnered with Burke County Public Library and NC State Parks for three unforgettable events that helped kids explore nature, local history, and even the role of park rangers. From scavenger hunts and swinging bridges to animal skulls and rescue drills, these hands-on programs brought over 100 kids and families to the Burke River Trail. See photos and highlights from each adventure — and learn why starting young builds lifelong love for the outdoors!
Scavenger Hunt Hike for Kids – This free outdoor adventure was all about helping kids connect with nature! We read Let’s Take a Hike, made pinecone birdfeeders, and explored the Burke River Trail on a scavenger hunt. At BRTA, we believe the best way to build lifelong respect for the outdoors is to start young — teaching kids to enjoy, explore, and care for the natural world around them.
Bridge Hike for Kids – What a great educational hike over 40 attendees to learn about the Meytre Grist Mill and the Catenary Bridge (swinging bridge) with a 1 mile round trip hike. Attendees got a BRT reflective whistle in case they ever get lost in the woods or need to scare off a bear — and when walking along a road — be reflective!!
What does a Ranger Do – Best Program Ever!!!! Thanks to North Carolina State Parks and Recreation Rangers Brian Vick and Clay Veasey for the program this morning. We learned so much about what rangers do, practiced rescuing someone, saw a tree get cut up, had a snack, did a craft, played with dead animals… Looking forward to the next event with Friends of the Valdese Rec and Valdese Rec Dept.
