Black Diamond Inspires

Exploring trail routes is both an art and a science, and sometimes the most challenging sections end up becoming the most spectacular. Recently, we brought in trail designer Joseph Litaker of Black Diamond Trail Designs to walk a potential new alignment for the Burke River Trail below the Rhodhiss Dam. While this route will be more difficult—and more expensive—than the original concept, Joseph reminded us that complexity often leads to opportunity. His expertise helped us reimagine the landscape not as a constraint, but as a canvas.

As we navigated steep slopes, old industrial remnants, and pockets of untouched natural beauty, Joseph pointed out features that could make this segment unforgettable: dramatic overlooks, moments of quiet near the water, opportunities to interpret the dam’s history, and even places for rain-garden education tied to watershed health. He encouraged us to “go bold” and build something that honors both the story of Rhodhiss and the natural character of the terrain.

We left the site energized and inspired—not just about where the trail might go, but about what it could be. With thoughtful design and community partnerships, this challenging stretch of land may become a highlight of the entire Burke River Trail corridor. We’re grateful for Joseph’s insight—and excited for what comes next. Thanks to Joseph for being a Burke River Trail Association Lifetime Member!!
