Painted Walkway

Drexel Cub Scouts Help Bring Color and Fun to the Storybook Trail

A new painted walkway is taking shape at the R.O. Huffman Center, adding another fun element to Drexel’s Storybook Trail!

When the Drexel Storybook Trail opened in June 2026, it gave families a new opportunity to combine reading, walking, and outdoor play. Now, thanks to the continued dedication of Drexel Cub Scout Pack 225 and a partnership with the Burke River Trail Association (BRTA), the trail is getting another creative addition.

Connecting the Story, One Step at a Time

The Drexel Storybook Trail features 16 pedestals displaying the pages of a children’s book along a walking route at the R.O. Huffman Center.

Half of the pedestals are located around the building, while the remaining pedestals are in the grassy area near the playground. To follow the entire story, families travel across a parking area and roadway to reach the second section.

From the beginning, we thought that the parking lot crossing offered an opportunity to do something fun. What if we could turn an ordinary stretch of pavement into a colorful, playful connection between the two halves of the trail?

The idea was to create a painted walkway that would help guide families along the Storybook Trail while adding an extra element of fun for children.

Initially, we considered completing the artwork with volunteers. But we wanted the finished project to look great, so we decided to bring in a professional artist.

Bringing the Idea to Life

Pages Paintbrush Company has been hired to create the artwork, and the project is now underway!

Paige has begun chalking out the proposed layout on the pavement, giving us a first glimpse of how this ordinary parking lot can become a more inviting part of the Storybook Trail experience.

The finished artwork will add color, creativity, and opportunities for playful interaction along the route.

Cub Scout Pack 225 Continues to Make a Difference

A very special thank you goes to Drexel Cub Scout Pack 225, which is providing approximately two-thirds of the funding for this project, with the Burke River Trail Association contributing the remaining one-third.

This is not the Scouts’ first contribution to the Storybook Trail.

Pack 225 played a major role in bringing the original Storybook Trail to Drexel, helping with fundraising and installation. Scout families also committed to changing the featured books each month, ensuring that children and families can return throughout the year for new stories.

Now they’re helping make the trail experience even better.

Their continued commitment demonstrates what community involvement looks like in action. These families are not simply participating in an activity. They’re helping create something lasting that other children and families throughout Drexel can enjoy.

We are grateful for the leadership, generosity, and enthusiasm of Pack 225 and its families!

A Community Partnership

We also appreciate the staff of the R.O. Huffman Center for their input and willingness to discuss design ideas for the painted walkway.

Thank you to the Town of Drexel for its continued partnership and for allowing this creative addition to the Storybook Trail.

The Burke River Trail Association is pleased to work alongside these partners to create welcoming outdoor spaces that encourage children to read, move, explore, and spend time together.

More Than a Storybook Trail

One of the wonderful things about community projects is that they don’t have to be finished when the original installation is complete.

The Drexel Storybook Trail began with an idea to bring books and outdoor recreation together. The monthly book changes keep the experience fresh, and now a colorful walkway will add another reason for families to visit.

It’s another example of how small, thoughtful investments can make public spaces more enjoyable and inviting.

We can’t wait to share pictures of the finished artwork!
