What Is a Storybook Trail?

  • A Storybook Trail (also called a StoryWalk® or Book Trail) places pages of a children’s book along a walking path using durable outdoor pedestals.
  • Families move from station to station, reading the story as they walk.
  • Sixteen pedestals typically display one full book.
  • Simple concept. Powerful results.

How Does It Work?

• A children’s book is carefully deconstructed.
• Each page is placed inside a weather-protected pedestal frame.
• The pages are spaced along a sidewalk, greenway, or trail.
• Families read the story one page at a time as they walk.

Books are typically changed monthly (two copies of the book are purchased — because the pages are flat, not turned). The pedestals we use are manufactured by Pannier Graphics and are specifically designed for outdoor StoryWalk installations.

Why Should Your Town Have One?

Because it checks multiple boxes at once:

📖 Promotes Early Literacy

Encourages reading in a fun, low-pressure way.

🚶‍♀️ Gets Kids Outside

Turns “Let’s go for a walk” into an adventure.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Builds Family Habits

Creates a reason to visit the park regularly.

🌳 Activates Existing Infrastructure

Works along greenways, sidewalks, trails, or downtown paths.

🗺️ Statewide Recognition

Your town will be listed on the official Story Trails of North Carolina map, connecting you to a statewide literacy initiative. Story Trails of North Carolina highlights programs that promote early literacy development and outdoor adventure across the state.
