From Litter Gitters to Leaders: BRTA Inspires Exceptional Clean-Up Crew

What started as a simple effort to keep our trail towns clean has sparked something truly special. BRTA’s Litter Gitters — a volunteer program providing vests, grabbers, gloves, and bags for roadside, shoreline, and trail cleanups — has not only helped beautify Burke County’s outdoor spaces, but has now inspired a brand-new initiative for a group of exceptional individuals.
At the September 5 Walkin’ Roll Game Night, the organization launched its Exceptional Clean-Up Crew — a volunteer team of individuals with special needs who are excited to give back to their community by helping keep it clean. Over 35 participants received their very own vests, grabbers, and gloves, officially kicking off their new mission to make a difference — in their neighborhoods, parks, roadsides, and even alongside BRTA volunteers during monthly cleanups.
The program was directly inspired by the Litter Gitters, and Walkin’ Roll applied for and received the same Thrivent Action Team Grant BRTA used to launch its effort. It’s a wonderful example of how peer-to-peer support and shared resources can empower more groups to step up and serve their communities. This opportunity offers not only hands-on service, but also builds confidence, routine, and a deep sense of community connection.
BRTA Executive Director Beth Heile served as the guest speaker for the evening, sharing the story behind the Litter Gitters, offering safety tips, and helping distribute the gear. The energy in the room was contagious — and the group photo of 35 volunteers proudly suited up is a powerful reminder of what true inclusion and stewardship look like.
As a special thank-you, Walkin’ Roll Director Sharon Elliott presented Beth with an official Walkin’ Roll t-shirt — making her an honorary member of the crew and welcoming her back anytime. Beth and Sharon have built a meaningful friendship rooted in shared purpose. Over the past year, Beth has helped amplify Sharon’s voice by inviting her to speak at the Friends of the Valdese Rec Lunch & Learn, the Valdese Rotary Club, and encouraging others — including Morganton Rotary — to host her as well. Sharon’s passion and message deserve to be heard far and wide.
This partnership reflects BRTA’s core mission: empowering all community members to connect with nature, contribute to their towns, and take pride in the places they call home. We’re honored to be part of this new chapter and can’t wait to see the Exceptional Clean-Up Crew in action — vests on, grabbers ready, and pride shining through.
