The Burke River Trail, a developing 40-mile pedestrian route weaving through Burke County, will connect the county’s nine municipalities and key points of interest. Spanning diverse terrain—from natural surfaces to paved paths—the trail will pass through picturesque landscapes and vibrant downtowns.

Spearheaded by the Burke River Trail Association (BRTA), the project aims to revitalize communities, promote civic engagement, and encourage responsible outdoor recreation. Beyond its scenic beauty, the trail will enhance mental, physical, and social well-being, offering a sustainable transportation option while supporting local businesses and boosting the economy.

Ultimately, the Burke River Trail represents an investment in community connectivity, long-term prosperity, and a lasting legacy for future generations.

BRTA’s Three Focus Areas

A Pathway to Place
Supporting trailhead parks, public art, riverfront planning, and greenway connections that create welcoming, connected communities.

A Pathway to Purpose
Inspiring stewardship, volunteerism, and civic engagement that bring people together and build pride in shared spaces.

A Pathway to Possibility
Helping towns prepare for walkability, revitalization, housing opportunities, tourism, and long-term economic vitality.

What began as a focus on Connections, Communities, and Conservation has evolved as the Burke River Trail has grown. Today, we see more clearly how a regional trail shapes not just where people go, but how communities thrive. The Burke River Trail is more than a physical route for walking and biking—it is a Pathway to Place, Purpose, and Possibility for every town along the corridor.

Join the Burke River Trail Association today and be a part of the pathway.

Each of the county’s unique downtowns holds its own distinct charm and character, and the Burke River Trail offers them a platform to showcase their individual highlights. From rich history to local attractions, from vibrant cultural scenes to hidden gems, the trail will serve as a conduit for communities to proudly present what makes them truly special.

But the benefits extend far beyond aesthetics and community pride. Trails have a profound impact on our well-being, encompassing mental, physical, and social aspects. They provide a sanctuary for individuals to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, rejuvenate their spirits, and embrace nature’s healing embrace. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll, an invigorating bike ride, or a heartfelt conversation with a fellow trail enthusiast, the Burke River Trail will foster connections, foster relationships, and promote overall wellness.

Moreover, trails serve as vital transportation corridors, offering a sustainable and active alternative for commuting and exploring the region. By reducing reliance on cars and encouraging active modes of transportation, the trail will contribute to a greener and healthier environment while promoting a sense of community cohesion.

The Burke River Trail holds immense potential for economic development. By attracting visitors from near and far, it will stimulate local businesses, support job creation, and boost the overall economy of Burke County. The trail will serve as a magnet, drawing nature lovers and adventure seekers who will not only appreciate the natural beauty but also contribute to the vitality of the surrounding communities.

The Burke River Trail represents a vision of connectivity, vibrancy, and prosperity. The trail is an investment in the present and a legacy for future generations.
